Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
