Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain rulings from the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
